What It’s Like to Volunteer With Us

From aprons to hard hats, everyone belongs

7/30/2025

At Bennington County Habitat for Humanity, our volunteers wear more than just branded aprons and sturdy work gloves. They show up wearing heart, a spirit of generosity, and a deep belief in what’s possible when people come together. Some wear hard hats, some wear sneakers and a name tag, and some wind up wearing more paint than they planned! But they all go home feeling impactful.

And the best part? There’s room for you, too.

So if you want to know what it’s like to volunteer with Habitat, keep reading!

You Don’t Need Experience—Just Heart

Some volunteers show up with decades of hands-on experience. Others have never picked up a drill. Either way, they find a home here.

On the construction site, you might be framing walls, installing insulation, painting trim, or helping keep the site clean and safe. Some folks volunteer every week. Others pop in just once or twice a season. What matters most is that you’re here—learning, helping, making a difference.

At the ReStore, volunteers help keep things running smoothly and the vibe welcoming. Some greet customers and help load donations. Others research and price new inventory, organize shelves, or test donated electronics. You’ll spot them in our brick patterned aprons, rolling up their sleeves to help someone build affordable housing—just by buying a couch.

Whether you’re an extrovert who loves chatting with shoppers, or someone who prefers a quiet task in the back room, there’s a role here for you.

These roles are about a lot more than just swinging hammers or selling furniture. They’re about building homes, building relationships, and building a stronger community right here in Bennington County.

Different People, Different Paths, One Mission

Every volunteer has their own story.

Some are retired and want to stay active.
Some just moved to the area and are looking for connection.
Some are parents with a little more free time these days.
Some are in town for a week and want to do something meaningful with their time.

Whether you’re looking to meet people, stay busy, learn a skill, or give back in a hands-on way, there’s a place for you. Maybe you’re in a season of change. Maybe you’re feeling the itch to do something useful. Maybe you’re just finally ready to try something new.

If that moment is now, we’re ready for you.

What You’ll Really Find Here

We have many different, flexible volunteer opportunities. Sure, you’ll walk away with paint on your pants or a few steps logged from restocking shelves… But you’ll also walk away with something else: a sense of impact.

We hear it again and again:

“I didn’t expect to love it this much.”
“I thought I was just giving my time, but I got so much more out of it.”
“It’s the highlight of my week.”

That’s because this work matters—and you can feel it. Whether you’re helping a shopper at the ReStore find a dining table for their new apartment, or helping raise the walls on a home that will change a family’s life, you’ll leave knowing you made a real difference.

And you’ll probably laugh a few times along the way. Our regulars are good people. Our staff is supportive. We like to work hard—but not without a sense of humor and a snack break or two.

All Kinds of People. All Kinds of Roles.

We see all kinds of volunteers walk through our doors:

Seasoned retirees who come every week and know more than most
Recent transplants building connections one shift at a time
Young adults who jump in when their schedule allows
Skilled tradespeople who mentor and lead
Complete beginners eager to help and learn

Some folks bring a friend. Others come alone and leave with new ones. Some want a job that keeps them moving and chatting; others prefer a quiet task they can dig into solo. Whatever your personality, we can find a role that suits you.

If you’ve got people skills, great—we can use you.
If you’ve got power tool skills, fantastic—we can use you.
If you’ve got time, curiosity, and a good attitude—that’s all we really need.

Ready to Get Started?

We make it easy to jump in with flexible volunteer opportunities. Our simple online registration is quick and straightforward. After that, just pick a shift—construction or ReStore—and show up ready to help. You’ll be part of the crew in no time.

Even if You're Just Visiting…

We know Bennington County draws weekenders, seasonal workers, and short-term visitors. If you’re in town for just a few days or weeks and want to do something meaningful—yes, you can still volunteer! Many hands make light work, no matter how briefly they’re here.

Besides, volunteering can have great impacts on your health!
